Northampton's Kings Heath Primary Academy awarded Model School status

Northampton’s Kings Heath Primary Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust, has been appointed as a Read Write Inc. Model School as a result of their excellent literacy teaching in 2018.

The 60 Read Write Inc. UK Model Schools vary hugely in their demographic and size. All have transformed their teaching by implementing the whole school approach advocated in Read Write Inc. Phonics, a reading and writing programme created by Ruth Miskin and published by Oxford University Press.

The programme for 4 to 8-year-olds and is taught for 1 hour every day and uses a phonic-approach. Children experience success from the very beginning. Lively reading books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases. Along with a thought- provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller’s voice.

The children write every day, rehearsing out loud what they want to say – drawing upon their own experiences and talking about the stories they read to build their ideas, vocabulary and grammar.

All Model Schools host half-termly open mornings for local teachers to observe Read Write Inc. lessons, see the impact on children’s results, behaviour and engagement, and ask questions about implementation.

Ruth Miskin, Creator of Read Write Inc, said: “Our Model Schools demonstrate an inspirational passion and excitement for teaching. Their attention to detail and focus on continuous professional development marks them out and is the key to their success in getting every child to read by 6. No child should get left behind and with the right teaching and assessments we can ensure every child is understood and the gaps in their knowledge identified and addressed.”

Kim Duff, Principal at Kings Heath Primary Academy, said: “We are thrilled that Kings Heath has been named as a Read Write Inc Model School. Our pupils have made rapid progress in their reading and writing, which has had a huge impact on other areas of their learning. Most importantly, our pupils love taking part in Read Write Inc and look forward to taking part in lessons every day.”

Kings Heath Primary Academy currently has places available for children of all age groups in our school.
